Purpose
This site is dedicated to the promotion of the ionosonde as a superior
instrument for observing the ionosphere.
Content
This link is an animated GIF of ionograms from the Digisonde at Qaanaaq,
Greenland.
It is the depiction of a sequence of 1 minute ionograms taken on 12
January 2002. The series is almost 24 hours long. It shows interesting
patch structure and the very dynamic nature of the high latitude ionosphere.
Note also the autoscaling is quite poor.

This animated GIF was created from the GIF images produced
by the Artist4 ionogram
scaler. The linux program gifsicle
was used to create the animation from the sequence of images.
Digisonde UDD Files
Digisonde data users who use the UMass Lowell
SAO Explorer program to analyze their data need something called a
UDD file for each station. The link below contains a list of the
ones I have been able to collect. Most of them are distributed with
the SAO Explorer program.
UDD Files
ToDo --Latitudes, Longitudes, Dips and Gyrofrequencies are slightly
inconsistent between these files.
I would like to obtain an official collection of these and update
the UDD files accordingly.

Time by a Modern Ionosonde Network; Space Environment Laboratory,
Boulder CO; July 1981
Scanned
report in Adobe pdf format (8.5MB)
Bill Wright and Adoph Paul wrote this report proposing a strategy for
the positions for a global network of ionosondes. This is a must
read report for anyone considering setting up a new ionosonde station.
